DIN Rail Profiles — technical overview

What a DIN rail does

The 35 mm top-hat rail is the common mounting plane inside a distribution board or control panel. Miniature circuit breakers, residual current devices, terminal blocks, relays, contactors and meters all clip onto the same profile, so devices from different manufacturers share one row without adapters. Demte rails are produced in compliance with IEC 60715, the international standard that defines the profile.

How the rails are cut

Rails are produced on automated flying-shear lines. The shear travels with the moving profile, so the section is not crushed at the cut and the edge leaves the machine burr-free. There is no deburring step before assembly, and no sharp edge for an installer to catch a hand or a cable insulation on.

Choosing the profile

  • 35 × 7.5 mm — the standard section, used for most distribution boards and control panels.
  • 35 × 15 mm — deeper section with higher rigidity, for long unsupported spans and heavier device rows.
  • Slotted (S) — the oblong hole pattern lets the fixing points be chosen anywhere along the rail and adjusted after marking.
  • Unslotted (U) — a continuous surface, drilled on site or fixed by other means.

Lengths

  • 2000 mm full length — for panel builders who cut in house. Packed 20 pcs for 35 × 7.5 and 10 pcs for 35 × 15.
  • Pre-cut 150–450 mm — sized to module counts, so the rail matches the enclosure without cutting: 150 mm = 8 modules, 170 mm = 9, 215 mm = 12, 275 mm = 15, 310 mm = 17, 400 mm = 22, 450 mm = 25.
  • Cut to length — made to order, any required length with a ± 1 mm tolerance.

Slot positioning on cut rails

  • Symmetrical cut — the factory standard. The distance from the last hole to the edge is equal at both ends.
  • Cut per drawing — asymmetrical hole positions or specific start and end offsets, produced from a DWG or DXF file you supply.

Material and finish

Zinc-plated steel with RoHS-compliant passivation. Pregalvanized and Cr+3 coatings are available.

Frequently asked questions

Which profile should I choose, 35 × 7.5 or 35 × 15?

35 × 7.5 mm covers most distribution boards and control panels. Choose 35 × 15 mm where the rail spans a long distance without support, or carries a heavy row of devices, because the deeper section is stiffer.

Can Demte cut rails to a length that is not in the table?

Yes. Cut-to-length is a made-to-order item with a ± 1 mm tolerance, and the edges arrive burr-free, so no secondary processing is needed before assembly.

Will the rails fit devices from other manufacturers?

Yes. The rails are produced to IEC 60715, the standard that defines the 35 mm top-hat profile, so any device designed for that profile clips on.

What is the difference between slotted and unslotted rails?

A slotted rail has an oblong hole pattern along its length, so fixing points can be chosen and adjusted freely. An unslotted rail has a continuous surface and is drilled on site or fixed by other means.
