Wiring Ducts — technical overview

What wiring ducts do

Inside a panel, the difference between a wiring job that can be maintained and one that cannot is usually the ducting. Wiring ducts carry conductors between devices in straight, separated runs, let a wire leave the duct at the right point through a slot, and close with a snap-on cover so the finished panel reads as rows of devices and clean channels rather than a mass of cable.

What is in this family

  • Slotted ducts — the standard channel, with 4 mm and 6 mm slot widths.
  • Non-slotted ducts — a closed channel for runs that must not be broken into.
  • Duct covers — snap-on covers supplied to match the duct sizes.
  • Wire retainers — clips that hold a bundle inside the duct while the cover is off, sized from 40 × 40 up to 120 × 100 and fitted to DTWD slotted ducts.

Certification

The duct range carries a UL certificate. UL is an independent product safety certification body, and the mark is issued to products that have passed its safety tests and procedures — which is what a specifier is usually looking for when a panel is built for export or for a customer working to international standards.

Choosing a duct

  • Slot width — 4 mm for fine, dense signal wiring; 6 mm where thicker conductors have to leave the channel.
  • Slotted or closed — use a non-slotted duct where a run must stay intact along its whole length.
  • Section — choose the cross-section on the bundle it will carry, leaving room for later additions rather than filling the duct at commissioning.
  • Standard length is 2 m.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 4 mm and 6 mm slots?

Slot width sets the largest conductor that can leave the duct cleanly at a given point. 4 mm suits fine signal and control wiring; 6 mm takes thicker conductors.

Are covers supplied with the ducts?

Covers are part of the family and are listed separately, so they can be ordered to match the duct sizes used in the panel.

What are wire retainers for?

They hold the bundle inside the channel while the cover is off, so conductors do not spring out during wiring. They fit DTWD slotted ducts in sizes from 40 × 40 to 120 × 100.
