Junction Boxes — technical overview

What junction boxes are for

A junction box protects a cable joint or a branch point from dust, water and mechanical damage, and keeps it accessible for later inspection. It is the simplest enclosure in a wiring system and usually the most numerous, which is why the way it closes and the way cables enter it matter more than anything else.

What is in this family

  • Junction boxes with knock-out entries — pre-formed entry points that are punched out on site for the sizes actually needed.
  • Junction boxes with blank sides — a plain, unbroken body for installers who drill their own entries.
  • Junction boxes with cable gland entries — supplied for gland fitting where a sealed, strain-relieved entry is required.

Bodies, covers and closing

Boxes are produced in PP and PS for the standard range, and in ABS with a polycarbonate cover where a transparent lid is needed so the joint can be inspected without opening the box. Three closing types are offered: press-fit covers for fast work, plastic screws, and stainless steel screws where the box will be opened repeatedly or sits in a damp location. Sides are smooth and covers are plain, so nothing collects dirt on an exposed wall.

Selecting a box

  • Entry type — knock-out for mixed cable sizes, blank sides for full freedom, gland entries where sealing and strain relief matter.
  • Cover — press-fit for speed, screwed for security, transparent for inspection.
  • Screw material — stainless steel for humid or corrosive locations.
  • Environment — the range operates from −25 °C to +60 °C with protection up to IP54.

Frequently asked questions

Which closing type should I choose?

Press-fit covers are quickest for boxes that stay closed. Choose plastic or stainless steel screws for boxes that will be opened again, and stainless steel where humidity would attack a plain screw.

When is a transparent cover worth it?

When the joint needs to be checked visually as part of routine inspection. The transparent versions use an ABS body with a polycarbonate cover.

What protection rating do the boxes reach?

Up to IP54, which covers dust in harmful quantity and splashing water from any direction. Operating range is −25 °C to +60 °C.
